Task Paralysis: Is It ADHD or Anxiety?

That feeling of being 'frozen' in front of your to-do list is incredibly frustrating. It’s not that you don’t want to work; it’s that your brain’s 'on' switch feels broken. By distinguishing between ADHD and anxiety, we can find the specific tool you need to flip that switch.

What is it?

Task paralysis (or 'ADHD paralysis') occurs when the brain is overwhelmed by input or choices, leading to a complete shutdown of task initiation. While ADHD paralysis is caused by a struggle to prioritize and sequence steps (Executive Dysfunction), anxiety-based paralysis is typically a 'freeze' response triggered by a fear of failure, judgment, or negative outcomes.

Signs & Symptoms

Feeling 'stuck' or physically unable to move toward a task
Staring at a screen or paper without processing information
Engaging in 'procrastivity' (doing unimportant tasks to avoid the big one)
Mental exhaustion from just thinking about starting
A racing heart or 'pit' in the stomach (more common in anxiety-driven paralysis)

Why does this happen?

ADHD paralysis is rooted in the prefrontal cortex; low dopamine levels make it hard to 'weight' tasks, so everything feels equally important and overwhelming. Anxiety-driven paralysis is rooted in the amygdala, which treats a difficult task like a physical threat, triggering a survival 'freeze' response.

The Action Plan

Try breaking down your next task like this to overcome the block:
1

The Sensory Reset

2m

Change your physical state. Splash cold water on your face or stand up and shake your limbs to break the 'freeze' loop.

2

Identify the 'Micro-Task'

1m

Don't 'clean the kitchen.' Instead, 'pick up one blue cup.' Make the goal so small it feels ridiculous to say no to.

3

Lower the Stakes

5m

Give yourself permission to do a 'trash' version of the task. Perfectionism fuels anxiety; low expectations fuel movement.

Stop fighting your brain.
